Birth weight (measured, recalled, or vital records/chart abstraction) is the weight of the infant in kilograms or pounds at birth. Birth weight is directly related to gestational age. Birth weight is associated not only with the health status of the infant/child, but has also been linked to later-life conditions-such as obesity, hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Birth weight is influenced by genetics, maternal health, prenatal health of the mother, environmental factors, multiple gestation births, and other factors. Low birth weight poses significant health risks.
