Many hobbies involve the use of volatile organic compounds such as paints, solvents, gasoline, or glues and adhesives that can cause adverse health effects such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, loss of coordination, damage to the liver, kidneys, or nervous system and even cancer. Other dangerous hobbies include the use of lead (e.g., making stained glass or fishing sinkers). By determining a person's hobbies a researcher may identify a potential cause of an exposure or an illness.
