This measure identifies a person's ability to connect to other types of individuals in life/society. Assessing a person's connectedness to others who hold specific resources (e.g., skills, knowledge, prestige, authority) is considered a standard way to measure the kind of social capital that individuals can access for routine and unusual circumstances/needs. The Position Generator identifies these social network resources, which are considered social capital. An individual's social capital has been shown to influence physical and mental health/illness as well as a person's overall well-being and quality of life. In addition, social capital is thought to have a broad range of effects on individual behavior (e.g., decision-making; ability to get help when needed) and circumstances (e.g., socio-economic status).
