The central nervous system (CNS) is an important sanctuary site for HIV replication. Studies measuring the penetration of antiretroviral drugs (such as acyclovir) are performed using the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of HIV positive patients in treatment, to help clinicians design treatment regimens that eliminate the virus, and still provide neuroprotective effects.
