GISAID Accession Numbers are unique and permanent identifiers for viral sequences. The GISAID numbers begin with letters EPI followed by a series of unique numbers. GISAID currently contains open-access genomic data for influenza viruses and SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Whole-genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 were made available on GISAID beginning in January 2020 to enable global genomic epidemiology and real-time surveillance of new COVID-19 viral strains.
